On arriving for your initial visit you will meet your therapist and be escorted into the treatment room for a brief interview. Non-medical information (name, address, etc.) is taken first and then information regarding the condition you are experiencing is discussed.
The therapist will ask questions to obtain more information, which will assist in forming an appropriate and effective treatment plan. Any information you disclose is confidential, and it is important for you to inform the therapist about any medical condition (heart disease, diabetes, etc.) even if it seems to be unrelated to the problem you have come in for.
The therapist will discuss the proposed treatment - which body parts will be treated, techniques used and aims of the therapy.
A physical assessment is performed, which helps to define the specific nature of the problem. Some tests may be done (palpation, joint range of motion, strength, etc.). This assessment creates a baseline for both you and the therapist to keep track of progress made.
Usually clients are treated while lying on the massage table, either prone or supine, (face down or face up) between two sheets and often with a top blanket to keep you warm. Pillows may be placed under the abdomen, knees or lower legs. Before leaving the room the therapist will explain what clothing or jewelry should be removed, how to lie on the table and how to cover yourself. You will be given a few minutes to get ready for your treatment.
During treatment, only the body part that is being treated will be uncovered, and if a change of position is required, the sheets and blanket are held in a way that ensures you remained covered. A small amout of oil or lotion is applied to the treatment area to prevent friction. The therapist may give you instructions about breathing or relaxation techniques or ask questions to obtain additional information. An ice pack may be applied to the treatment area after the therapy is completed. Some clients enjoy talking during the treatment, while others prefer to stay quiet.
You may, at any time during the interview, assessment or treatment, ask questions or express any concerns you may have.
When the treatment is completed, the therapist will leave the room, giving you time to relax for few minutes and then to get up and get dressed. The therapist will then re-enter the room to discuss the treatment, and to explain post-treatment care which may include ice applications, stretches or remedial exercise that you do to facilitate the healing process.
If follow-up treatment is necessary, another session time is booked. Payment is rendered and you will be issued a receipt. The session is now complete.
